Birding in Burbayar
The Burbayar Nature Reserve is located on the continental divide, 1,230 feet above sea level on the border between Panama City and the Guna Yala region. Situated in the Chocó-Darién biogeographic region between the Pacific and Caribbean basins, the reserve enjoys a spectacular abundance of local and migratory birds. Birders and nature lovers come to hike the expansive network of trails, which provide access to waterfalls, rivers, and natural pools. The name of the 150-acre reserve means “Spirit of the Mountain” in Guna dialect. More than three hundred bird species have been counted within its limits.
Located 56 miles north of Panama City, the Burbayar Nature Reserve boasts six cabins with private bathrooms and orthopedic mattresses. The package includes transportation, naturalist guides, and all meals. The reserve has electricity and a cell phone signal.
